47th CMA Awards nominations

47th Annual CMA Awards Logo

The final nominees for the 47th CMA awards were announced earlier today by Sheryl Crow and Florida Georgia Line. The show will air on Wednesday 6th November and will be hosted by returning pair Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood.

Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift led the nominations with six nominations each followed by Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton with five each. Florida Georgia Line and Keith Urban receive four and Little Big Town receive the most amount of nominations for any group with three. Read on for the full list of nominees and my predictions on the winners....

Entertainer Of The Year
Jason Aldean
Luke Bryan
Blake Shelton
George Strait
Taylor Swift

Predicted winner = George Strait
An interesting nomination for George Strait this year amongst the more expected artists. Frustrating not to see Little Big Town or Zac Brown Band in this category though, both of whom were in the final round of voting for it. George Strait has had a very strong year (and career in general) and is well supported by his peers, fans and press alike.

Female Vocalist Of The Year
Kelly Clarkson
Miranda Lambert
Kacey Musgraves
Taylor Swift
Carrie Underwood

Predicted winner = Carrie Underwood
This category has surprised me slightly with no nominations for Martina and Reba. As seems to be the case for the past few years I feel this will come down to Miranda or Carrie. Miranda won last year however Carrie has had an incredibly successful year with a strong tour and album (which receives an album nomination as well)

Male Vocalist Of The Year
Jason Aldean
Luke Bryan
Eric Church
Blake Shelton
Keith Urban

Predicted winner = Luke Bryan
Whilst this will be tough I think it will be between Luke and Blake and Luke has had a more successful year (he was awarded Entertainer at this year's ACM awards as well)

New Artist Of The Year
Lee Brice
Brett Eldredge
Florida Georgia Line
Kip Moore
Kacey Musgraves

Predicted winner = Florida Georgia Line
The duo have had a hugely successful year and are also set to embark upon their first headlining tour. I would love to see Brett Eldredge win this as I think he is an incredibly strong artist but realistically Florida Georgia Line are doing incredibly well.

Vocal Group Of The Year
Eli Young Band
Lady Antebellum
Little Big Town
The Band Perry
Zac Brown Band

Predicted winner = Little Big Town
Always a tough category but the reigning Vocal Group Of The Year have certainly done enough to deserve this. They have had an incredibly successful headlining tour as well as joining Keith Urban's tour and "Tornado" is doing well for them.

Vocal Duo Of The Year
Big & Rich
Florida Georgia Line
Love And Theft
Sugarland
The Civil Wars
Thompson Square

Predicted winner = Thompson Square
Thompson Square are a really strong duo and broke Sugarland's winning streak last year. I think Florida Georgia Line could challenge them but don't have enough to beat them. Sugarland and Big & Rich are strong duos but seems odd to have nominations for them when they haven't released music or toured recently.

Single Of The Year
"Cruise" Florida Georgia Line
"Highway Don't Care" Tim McGraw with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban
"Mama's Broken Heart" Miranda Lambert
"Merry Go 'Round" Kacey Musgraves
"Wagon Wheel" Darius Rucker

Predicted winner = "Cruise" Florida Georgia Line
The track has been huge for the duo and has beaten many records as well as having huge amounts of positive feedback from fans and press alike.

Album Of The Year
"Based On A True Story...." Blake Shelton
"Blown Away" Carrie Underwood
"Red" Taylor Swift
"Same Trailer Different Park" Kacey Musgraves
"Tornado" Little Big Town

Predicted winner = "Tornado" Little Big Town
This is definitely going to be the hardest category this year. With so many brilliant albums eligible it is hard but "Tornado" has done incredibly well for Little Big Town with two number one singles and has gone to number one as an album and recently been declared platinum. It contains a strong mix of songs and definitely deserves to win.

Song Of The Year
"I Drive Your Truck" Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary
"Mama's Broken Heart" Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally and Kacey Musgraves
"Merry Go 'Round" Kacey Musgraves, Josh Osbourne and Shane McAnally
"Pontoon" Natalie Hemby, Luke Laird and Barry Dean
"Wagon Wheel" Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor

Predicted winner = "I Drive Your Truck" Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary
A lovely song that is very emotional. Song Of The Year is always more about the lyrics of the song rather than chart sales and I really think this song deserves the award. In my opinion the strongest competition for it is "Mama's Broken Heart" but "I Drive Your Truck" is more emotive.

Musical Event Of The Year
"Boys 'Round Here" Blake Shelton (featuring Pistol Annies)
"Cruise" Florida Georgia Line (with Nelly)
"Don't Rush" Kelly Clarkson (featuring Vince Gill)
"Highway Don't Care" Tim McGraw (with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban)
"The Only Way I Know" Jason Aldean (with Luke Bryan and Eric Church)

Predicted winner = "Highway Don't Care" Tim McGraw (with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban)
This has been a huge hit for all involved and I think it's probably the best out of the nominations. Could be an interesting category though with a lot of big names in there.

Music Video Of The Year
"Blown Away" Carrie Underwood
"Boys 'Round Here" Blake Shelton featuring Pistol Annies
"Downtown" Lady Antebellum
"Highway Don't Care" Tim McGraw with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban
"Mama's Broken Heart" Miranda Lambert
"Tornado" Little Big Town

Predicted winner = "Blown Away" Carrie Underwood
This is a surprisingly hard category and one that I found hard to pick a winner. "Tornado" has been a successful video for Little Big Town but is admittedly not one of my favourites. I don't tend to watch many music videos however "Blown Away" is impressively atmospheric. Could be an interesting category though!

Musician Of The Year
Sam Bush (Mandolin)
Paul Franklin (Steel Guitar)
Dann Huff (Guitar)
Brent Mason (Guitar)
Mac McAnally (Guitar)

Predicted winner = Paul Franklin (Steel Guitar)
Whilst Mac McAnally won this last year, Paul Franklin's "Bakersfield" album with Vince Gill might be enough to give him the win. I always find this hard to predict though.

Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley CMA - 2013 CountryMusicIsLove

CMA snubs
Surprising to see how many huge names aren't nominated this year. No female vocalist nominations for Martina McBride and Reba McEntire is odd. Brad Paisley has had a very strong year with the release of Wheelhouse however there are no nominations for him and none for his peer Jake Owen. I would also argue it would have been nice to have seen Entertainer nominations for Little Big Town and Zac Brown Band (both of whom were eligible in the final voting) There are many opinions on the lack of nominations for certain artists but they are my main thoughts.

In recap my predictions are....
Entertainer Of The Year = George Strait
Female Vocalist Of The Year = Carrie Underwood
Male Vocalist Of The Year = Luke Bryan
New Artist Of The Year = Florida Georgia Line
Vocal Group Of The Year = Little Big Town
Vocal Duo Of The Year = Thompson Square
Single Of The Year = "Cruise" Florida Georgia Line
Album Of The Year = "Tornado" Little Big Town
Song Of The Year = "I Drive Your Truck" Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary
Musical Event Of The Year = "Highway Don't Care" Tim McGraw (with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban)
Music Video Of The Year = "Blown Away" Carrie Underwood
Musician Of The Year = Paul Franklin (Steel Guitar)
