48th CMA Awards nominations

So, it's that time of year again! Read on for CMA winner predictions from Tara
(at www.thedailycountry.com) and I....let us know your thoughts!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR

Luke Bryan
Miranda Lambert
Blake Shelton
George Strait
Keith Urban

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: I do believe King George will be crowned EOTY again.
Who Should Win: Okay. Blake live just does nothing for me, Miranda, while often times fantastic, has had many an “off” performance, Keith is fine, but Luke (and I am NOT a huge LB fan) whether you like him or not, entertains plain and simple.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: George Strait would be a nice choice from the industry and would round out his touring legacy. He headlined a hugely successful tour and is incredibly well respected
Who Should Win: To be honest I would probably go with George Strait again here. My only other thought is Keith as he is well publicised as having great tours but he hasn't won much recently and George Strait is a country music legend.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR

Miranda Lambert
Martina McBride
Kacey Musgraves
Taylor Swift
Carrie Underwood

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win/Who Should Win: There really is no discussion here. Miranda will take home another win.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Okay, I know I am probably going to divide opinion here but I am honestly annoyed that Taylor is included within this. She has wholeheartedly said she is now pop and yet is still nominated - possibly left over from Red. Martina is an interesting addition as she hasn't released a country album for a few years and was also noticeably absent from last year's nominees. I can't see Kacey winning this so it is between Miranda and Carrie, most likely with Miranda winning.
Who Should Win: It would be nice to see this category shaken up a bit, instead of having the usual people with one or two fading in and out. I have to say Miranda here.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR

Dierks Bentley
Luke Bryan
Eric Church
Blake Shelton
Keith Urban

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: This is one tough category, however, there are no jaw dropping vocalists on this list a la Chris Stapleton. Will Blake win again? I guess it is possible, although I think it is time for a changing of the guard, so to speak. Nice to see Keith, but I don’t think he or Luke will take it. I think it comes down to Mr. Church and Mr. Bentley.Dierks is coming off of two consecutive number ones and has a successful, publicised tour that puts the odds in his favour.
Who Should Win: While I can recognise that neither of them are extraordinary vocalists, I am a huge fan of both Eric and Dierks, so if either of them win I will be thrilled.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: This could be an interesting one. As the reigning male vocalist Blake stands a strong chance however Dierks' album has been incredibly well received and is continuously discussed by both industry and fans, thereby keeping fresh in people's minds. Eric is an outside possibility, his new album is hardly 'country' though.
Who Should Win: Dierks! All talented vocalists but Dierks has had a huge year.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to Artist and Producer(s))

Crash My Party, Luke Bryan
Fuse, Keith Urban
Platinum, Miranda Lambert
Riser, Dierks Bentley
The Outsiders, Eric Church

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: All successful albums, but none with the pretty much universal acclaim of Eric Church’s The Outsiders. However, it is possible that voters will be turned off by the rock and metal influences and if that is the case, I think Miranda will take the trophy.
Who Should Win: For me, The Outsiders. It is a varied, yet complete album that somehow combines many genres (and sometimes throws you curveballs), and makes for an interesting start to finish listen.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Interesting category....Eric won when he was last nominated for Chief but I can't see him wining for The Outsiders. I think Riser takes this although between Dierks and Miranda in my opinion.
Who Should Win: Riser - really strong album that has done a lot for Dierks. Platinum is another strong album but I personally prefer Dierks'.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR

Eli Young Band
Lady Antebellum
Little Big Town
The Band Perry
Zac Brown Band

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Lady A who came back from a serious lull with the #1 Bartender.
Who Should Win: I truly do not have an issue with any of the artists nominated in this category. They are all extremely talented and very good live. However, The Band Perry is between projects, LBT and EYB have singles that, while doing well, are not super buzzworthy, and ZBB, well they never get any love.Lady Antebellum is riding a wave of momentum that the other four are lacking, although Little Big Town would have my vote (if I could vote).

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Tough one, at the time the voting closed Lady A had just released Bartender so I'm not convinced they had enough push to get them the award. A ZBB win would be interesting but unlikely so this goes to TBP in my opinion.
Who Should Win: Little Big Town all the way! Unfortunately I don't realistically think it's going to happen this year as they have not been active enough after having spent time recording the new album - next year could be interesting though!

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to Artist and Producer(s))

Automatic
Miranda Lambert
Produced by Frank Liddell, Chuck Ainlay, and Glenn Worf

Drunk On A Plane
Dierks Bentley
Produced by Ross Copperman, Jaren Johnston, ArturoBuenahora, Jr.

Give Me Back My Hometown
Eric Church
Produced by Jay Joyce and Arturo Buenahora, Jr.

Meanwhile Back At Mama’s
Tim McGraw featuring Faith Hill
Produced by Byron Gallimore and Tim McGraw

Mine Would Be You
Blake Shelton
Produced by Scott Hendricks

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Holy goodness, this is another TOUGH category!! Voters love nostalgia so Automatic and Meanwhile Back at Mama’s seem to be frontrunners. DOAP was a two week number one, but may be seen as too silly for the honour (even though it’s not a silly song per se) and while Give Me Back My Hometown is terrific, it is no Springsteen. I think Mine Would Be You will take this one.
Who Should Win: Give Me Back My Hometown. Yeah, I know what I said above, but to me, it is the best of the bunch. It elicited a deeper emotion in me that none of the other songs did……exactly what a good song is supposed to do.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: This has gone to 'party' tracks the past few years so the obvious choice is Drunk On A Plane. The track does stand on it's own as the only 'party' track though so that may mean this is starting to change.
Who Should Win: Meanwhile Back At Mama's is a lovely song, I'd love to see that win! Tim frequently releases rocky, slightly uncomfortable, feeling tracks as singles so it's great to see this released (and nominated!) Faith's inclusion also adds to the track as the two have not dueted in years.

SONG OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to Songwriter(s))

Automatic
Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby, and Miranda Lambert

Follow Your Arrow
Kacey Musgraves, Brandy Clark, and Shane McAnally

Give Me Back My Hometown
Eric Church and Luke Laird

I Don’t Dance
Lee Brice, Rob Hatch, and Dallas Davidson

I Hold On
Brett James and Dierks Bentley

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: All songs with an emotional punch, but none greater than I Hold On and Follow Your Arrow. I think the voters will lean towards Kacey as the industry darling.
Who Should Win: I Hold On. As I have said before, if you want to know who Dierks Bentley is all you have to do is listen to this song. It’s poignant, authentic and an anthem for everyman and woman.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Opposite to the single of the year award, this traditionally goes to the more emotional tracks. Out of these I think I Hold On takes it. Give Me Back My Hometown could be interesting though as it is one of the most 'country' tracks on Eric's album.
Who Should Win: I do love Automatic but I would wholeheartedly support I Hold On for this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VOCAL DUO OF THE YEAR

Dan + Shay
Florida Georgia Line
Love and Theft
The Swon Brothers
Thompson Square

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: The only ones with half a chance are Dan + Shay, but they don’t have the ability to take it from Florida Georgia Line.
Who Should Win: Trying to look at this objectively, but I would just leave this ballot blank.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Florida Georgia Line all the way. Admittedly they haven't had such a huge year this year as they did before the last awards however the other four haven't had enough to beat them (with Dan + Shay and The Swon Brothers being very new artists).
Who Should Win: I keep saying this but I'd love to see Thompson Square win. As Florida Georgia Line's album is nearly two years old I'd definitely say Thompson Square have a chance here, I just don't think it's enough.

MUSICAL EVENT OF THE YEAR

Bakersfield
Vince Gill and Paul Franklin
Mercury Nashville

Meanwhile Back At Mama’s
Tim McGraw featuring Faith Hill
Big Machine

Somethin’ Bad
Miranda Lambert duet with Carrie Underwood
RCA Nashville

We Were Us
Keith Urban featuring Miranda Lambert
Capitol Records Nashville

You Can’t Make Old Friends
Kenny Rogers duet with Dolly Parton
Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Since industry veterans are nominees I think the decision lies choosing between Bakersfield, which was a terrific album, and You Can’t Make Old Friends. Let’s face it, can Kenny and Dolly be nominated and NOT win?
Who Should Win: I very much enjoyed Bakersfield, but think Tim and Faith should win with this song. After his previous release, which was more than awful, he brought in the wife for a song that was nicely sung, sentimental, emotional and…..country.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: I reckon this goes to Somethin' Bad. Miranda and Carrie are huge names within the industry and the song did really well. Bakersfield and We Were Us have been nominated before but not won. You Can't Make Old Friends would be a nice win, especially considering the story behind it and Kenny and Dolly's relationship but, Somethin' Bad wins.
Who Should Win: Meanwhile Back At Mama's! The first duet from Tim and Faith in years and a touching nostalgic track.

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR

Automatic

Bartender
Lady Antebellum
Directed by Shane Drake

Drunk On A Plane
Dierks Bentley
Directed by Wes Edwards

Follow Your Arrow
Kacey Musgraves
Directed by Kacey Musgraves and Honey

Somethin’ Bad
Miranda Lambert duet with Carrie Underwood
Directed by Trey Fanjoy

TARA'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Let’s just discount Lady A and Kacey. Dierks video is hilarious, terrific actually and Miranda is nominated twice so that could either cancel her out or work to her advantage. That said, I think she will win with Somethin’ Bad. Even though the storyline isn’t new, the movie preview feel of the video is innovative and left you wanting a part two.
Who Should Win: Even though the story in the song isn’t necessarily a happy one, Dierks manages to bring the fun on a 737 and make forgetting about getting dumped seem like a heck of a good time in Drunk On A Plane. It’s funny, well done and a video I watched numerous times. As I hate flying, this might actually be a flight I would take!

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win/Who Should Win: I'll admit, Drunk On A Plane kind of annoys me. It just feels like a throwaway track. Automatic is stronger than Somethin' Bad and deserves to win something, great track and the nostalgic feel seems to be increasingly popular.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR

Brandy Clark
Brett Eldredge
Kip Moore
Thomas Rhett
Cole Swindell

TARA'S PICKS

Who Will Win/Who Should Win: Brandy Clark put out an amazing album that, sadly, not everyone has heard. And she certainly does not feel the love from commercial country radio. However, she is a true artist and storyteller who has a tremendous gift in crafting songs. There is no one more deserving of New Artist than she is.

KASEY'S PICKS
Who Will Win: Always hard to predict in my opinion. Brandy and Cole don't have enough push behind them and their albums weren't hugely popular. Kip Moore and Brett Eldredge have been nominated before. Thomas Rhett is a new addition and is probably the winner.
Who Should Win: I would love to see Brett win this. He is a very talented artist with a great album out. He also, purportedly, delivers great live shows.
