2013 ACM awards winners

The 2013 Academy Of Country Music awards took place last night in Las Vegas. The awards are usually hosted by Blake Shelton and Reba McIntire but this year saw Luke Bryan take over Reba's hosting duties. Luke also accepted the highest award of the night, Entertainer Of The Year. He was emotional in his acceptance speech of the fan-voted award and said
"Thank you guys so much, [my] fans for doing this, thank you so much for making my life what it is. What I always wanted to be was just a country singer who got to ride on a tour bus and play music every night. Everyone I opened up for: Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney -- I just started headlining -- every guy I've watched from the side of the stage and tried to become a better entertainer. This is the defining moment of my life, and I'll never take it for granted."
The biggest winner of the night was Miranda Lambert, taking home the awards for Female Vocalist Of The Year, Single Of The Year (Over You) and Song Of The Year (Over You).

There was an abundance of live performances during the show with songs from Jana Kramer, The Band Perry, Little Big Town, Jason Aldean and Lady Antebellum amongst others. There were also a few 'musical events' during the show with Luke Bryan, Sheryl Crow, Pistol Annies, Gwen Sebastian and Brad Paisley joining Blake Shelton to sing his new single Boys 'Round Here as well as Brad Paisley and John Mayer singing Brad's new song Beat This Summer and Tim McGraw, Keith Urban and Taylor Swift performing Highway Don't Care from Tim's new CD. Garth Brooks and George Strait sang a medley of their hits in tribute to Dick Clark and Stevie Wonder closed the show, singing first with Hunter Hayes and then with Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan.

Entertainer Of The Year - Luke Bryan
I had originally predicted that Luke would win this and I'm very happy that he did. It shows the power of the fans though in the fact that he beat such artists as Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton when he normally wouldn't in a show such as the CMAs.

Male Vocalist Of The Year - Jason Aldean
This is an interesting choice for me and in my opinion was quite unexpected. I had predicted Eric Church would walk away with this award. This also marks Jason's first Male Vocalist Of The Year win at the ACMs.

Female Vocalist Of The Year - Miranda Lambert
I think this was always going to be between Miranda or Carrie although I did think Carrie was the more likely of the two.

Vocal Duo Of The Year - Thompson Square
Marking their second Vocal Duo win it seems Thompson Square's current success is set to continue. Their newest album is doing very well and in my opinion could challenge for the CMA Album Of The Year award later in the year.

Vocal Group Of The Year - Little Big Town
I am a huge Little Big Town fan so am very happy they won this award. Vocal Group Of The Year seems to be the hardest category at the moment with artists such as The Band Perry, Zac Brown Band and Lady Antebellum competing for the award as well.

New Artist Of The Year - Florida Georgia Line
It was quite hard to predict the winner of this award (I ultimately went with Jana Kramer) but Florida Georgia Line have certainly been having a lot of success at the moment - especially with their hit song "Cruise".

Album Of The Year - Chief  - Eric Church
I couldn't decide between "Chief" or Little Big Town's "Tornado" when I predicted the awards (I picked "Tornado" in the end) but I'm very happy to see "Chief" win. Eric Church is a lot rockier than a lot of current country male vocalists so it's nice to see him continue to win awards. It is also interesting to see Eric Church beat Taylor Swift's "Red" to the award.

Single Record Of The Year - Over You - Miranda Lambert
This is such a lovely song and has recieved a lot of critical acclaim from both fans and press.

Song Of The Year - Over You - Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton
Perhaps the more lyric based of the two song awards. Whilst I would have given Single Record Of The Year to Little Big Town's "Pontoon", I think "Over You" definitely deserves this award. The whole story behind the lyrics is lovely and Miranda sings it well.

Video Of The Year - Tornado - Little Big Town
A brilliant song with a dark video. Personally I didn't love the video as much as I loved the song but it was very well produced and showed the group's versatility having released the 'summer anthem' "Pontoon" as their previous single.

Vocal Event Of The Year - The Only Way I Know - Jason Aldean with Luke Bryan & Eric Church
I always find Vocal Event hard to predict but well deserved from these three artists.
If you want to see my full original predictions you can read them here - I ultimately correctly picked five out of the eleven I predicted. The next big awards show is the CMAs in November and I'm very interested to see the nominations considering the strength of the new artists and the amount of albums being released this year.
